When is Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) is Right for Angina?

Angina is a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. It is a symptom of Coronary Artery Disease also known as heart blockage. Angina is also called angina pectoris and its symptoms include squeezing, pressure, heaviness, tightness, or pain in your chest. It can be sudden or even reoccur over time.

When a heart patient encounters angina episodes they don’t always need a surgery. Rather a doctor may prescribe them certain non-surgical treatment options. One such non-invasive treatment is EECP.

EECP is Enhanced External Counter Pulsation, a non-invasive treatment that is administered through three pairs of external inflatable cuffs that are applied around the lower legs, upper legs, and buttocks. These cuffs continuously inflate and deflate between the resting period of the heartbeat and while increasing the blood returned to the heart.

The basic principle of EECP therapy involves increasing the amount of blood returning to the heart, which helps supply more oxygen to its starved areas. With more oxygen available, heart can function much more efficiently and therefore this reduces chest pain.On the other hand inflation improves the blood flow to all organs and, gradually over-time it increases the health of all the arteries.

This therapy is effective when applied over a period of time and hence the commitment to pursue this is significant. The treatment schedules over a period of 7-weeks of continuous treatments, which require daily visits for one hour. It also needs proper meal-intake comprising of a complete combination of nutrients.

The benefits of EECP Treatment include increased oxygen supply for the heart, decrease in chest pain, improved Electrocardiography/ECG response (An ECG can determine if the heart is beating too fast or too slow) to exercise, decrease in nitroglycerin use which has various side-effects, increase in energy and increased exercise-duration.

EECP has proved to be effective in enhancing wellness for patients if they pursue it sincerely and back it up with correct exercises, nutrition, stress management, and certain behavioral changes. However, whether it can remove heart blockage or can be a substitute for bypass surgery can only be decided after you get yourself tested by a Heart Specialist.

This depends on the severity of your condition and requires a wholesome assessment of your body. This includes a Nursing-Assessment including a review of your medical history, any contraindications to the treatment, Stress-Test which determines the exercise capacity of your body, and finally an Orientation-Assessment which is designed to give you the chance to experience exactly what this treatment will actually be like.
